ICES Celebrates
Silver Jubilee
One of Sri Lanka's oldest and leading
think tanks the International Centre for Ethnic Studies
(ICES) is celebrating its silver jubilee this year.
Founded in 1982 ICES is the only research institute
od its kind located in Sri Lanka that has a global
reach in terms of the work it does. Sri Lanka's pre-eminent
historian Kingsley M. de Silva and the eminent constitutional
lawyer late Neelan Tiruchelvam jointly founded the
Centre. An LTTE suicide bomber assassinated Mr. Tiruchelvam
in 1998. From its inception ICES has operated with
two offices, one in Kandy and the other in Colombo.
ICES Kandy recently held a simple ceremony at Hotel
Tourmaline to celebrate the Silver Jubilee and inaugurate
a conference on “Violent Conflict, Terrorism
and Nation Building in Sri Lanka and South Asia.”
A distinguished group of scholars from India, Pakistan,
Nepal and Sri Lanka attended the ceremony and participated
in the conference.
