KMC Budget Deficit is Rs 74 Million

Mayor L B Aluvihare and his officials are struggling to bridge a massive unanticipated budget deficit totaling Rs 74 million and finding that they have very few politically palatable options to find a solution. KMC and Business Join Hands to Develop Kandy

KMC and the Kandy business community have come together to improve Kandy town and to help enhance the efficiency of the services that the Council provides. This is a new initiative that the two parties have undertaken under the Local Governance Development Programme that The Asia Foundation (TAF) is conducting in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) in fifteen local authority jurisdictions.

Deputy Mayor Suminda Wickremasinghe chairs this new KMC-Business alliance called Devolopment Commite of Kandy municipal Council and Bussiness Commiunity. It has already prepared an elaborate plan to upgrade Dalada Veediya as its first major project. The Commitee which met recently under the leadership of Mayor L B Aluvihare together with representatives of TAF decided to seek the assistance of the businesses and banks in Dalada Veediya to fund the proposed facelift. Chief Minister Helps Hantana Community with Road Repair

Chief Minister of the Central Provincial Council Mr. Sarath Ekanayake has come to the rescue of the residents living in Gemunu Mawatha at Hantana Place, Kandy by approving a sum of Rs 200,000 to repair a culvert that collapsed and made Gemunu Mawatha impassable. Doctors who reside in the area were compelled to make a detour to reach the hospital for work.

KMC Can Improve Kandy Business Environment

A survey carried out recently by The Asia Foundation (TAF), one of the oldest (1954) US-based NGOs working in the development field in Asia, reveals that the KMC can become more business-friendly in its conduct of governance. TAF has reached this conclusion based on something called the “Economic Governance Index (EGI) 2007”* that it constructed to “measure the local enabling environment for private enterprise” in 15 municipacal council areas and 33 urban council areas outside the north and east. This is the first ever such comprehensive assessment made in this country.
