Central Province Chamber Recognises Top Entrepreneurs

Thirty one entrepreneurs from the Central Province were recognized in the Entrepreneur of the Year 2003 competition that the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Central Province and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka jointly organized earlier this year.

The competition was held in four categories of business, small, medium, large and extra large. Only Vijitha Aruna Kumara of Vijitha Brass Products won a Gold Award in the entire competition. In the medium category three entrepreneurs Jagath Rajaratne of Studio Design World (Pvt) Ltd., K N Kodithuwakku of Dulanjali Brass Products, and Nimal Peiris of Tele Pix (Pvt) Ltd won silvers, and so did Indika Chandrasekera of LH Chandrasekera & Brothers. In the extra large category the sole winner was K A Dinapala.

The thirty one winners in the competition received awards at a ceremony held recently at Kandyan Art Residency Governor of the Central Province Monty Gopallawa attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Chief Minister of Central Province Sarath Ekanayake, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy R. Pillai, and the Deputy Mayor of Kandy L. B. Aluvihare were the guests of honour.

President of the Central Province Chamber Dudley D W Jayasekera welcomed the guests. In his address he noted that the Central Province Chamber tried its best to cater to the diverse needs of its members. We serve the business community without any heed to ethnicity, religion, caste or creed he said. At the same time the Chamber was also conscious of its large responsibilities in the realm of environment, good governance, peace building and other issues essential for the sustainable development of a prosperous community, he noted.

Mag Auto Spring Kandy Tyre House Win ISO Approval

Mag Auto Springs (Pvt) Ltd, that manufactures spring blades for heavy vehicles at the Pallekale Industrial Park, has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 Certificate by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution. The company is a subsidiary of Kandy Tyre House (Pvt.) Ltd.

Kandy Tyre House that started business in the tyre trade has now diversified in to a number of businesses forming the Mag Group of Companies. The Mag Group continues to sell retail tyres and tubes. It is also a major importer of tyres and automobile batteries with an island-wide distribution network.

In manufacturing the main Mag lines are tyre retreading and the production of spring blades for heavy vehicles. In the service area the “Mag Care” automobile service center and the “Mag City” service centre have become very popular with vehicle owners.

 

Kandy Lions Give Water
to Village

The Lions Club of Kandy provided a new water scheme at a cost of Rs 700,000 to the village of Alutwattegama with about 300 resident families located about twenty miles from Kandy. Lion Roger from Belgian and his Lion Lady Rita, shown in the picture at the opening ceremony, assisted the club to raise the funds. Kandy Lions President Ernie Dassanayake and Region Chairman and the chairman for the project Lion Lasantha De Fonseka seen in the picture were also closely associated with the project.

 

First Classes in Medicine for
Kandy Students

Three students from Kandy, Pradeepa Iddamalgoda (Mahamaya), Champa Rathnatunge (Girls' High School), and R. Ariyasinghe (Trinity), got first classes in the recently conducted third MB Examination of the Peradeniya Medical School. All three candidates have got distinctions in Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Parasitology.


 


New Indian Assistant High Commissioner Welcomed

The executive committee of the Sri Lanka-India Cultural Association, Kandy hosted a dinner at Hotel Citadel to welcome the new Assistant High Commissioner for India in Kandy Mr. K K R Pillai and Mrs. Saraswathi Pillai to Kandy.
