The
main Kandy branch is one of the oldest branches of the Bank
of Ceylon. The Bank was established in 1939 as a private bank
to serve mainly the Sri Lankan community that did not have
adequate access to the British banks that operated in the
island at that time. As a part of the anniversary celebration
the Kandy branch recognized, with the award of commemorative
plaques, its ten customers with the oldest accounts.
The
other events in the celebrations included several acts of
philanthropy. The Bank donated a refrigerator and other equipment
to the cardiology unit of the Kandy hospital, rupees 100,000
worth of crockery to the Malwatta and Asgiriya temples, and
insurance policies for some lucky child account holders. |
