on Top of Car Park
| An
auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,000, a modern
cinema and a restaurant will be some of the amenities
that will be available at the Kandy Cultural Centre
the Kandy Municipal Council is planning to construct
on top of the new car park. Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake
told The Kandy News that the construction work on this
project would be inaugurated next May when the car park
is ceremonially opened. Mr. Senanayake said that on
an appeal made by him Persistent Chandrika Kumaratunga
has promised to provide the Rs 125 million that is estimated
to cost the project.
The mayor says that a traditional Kandyan architectural
design would be used for the Centre. Visitors to the
Centre will be able enjoy a panoramic view of the Kandy
lake and beyond, he said.

mayor of Kandy Mr. Kesara Senanayake has written the following
letter to us in response to the news story that we carried
in The Kandy News (February-March 2005). This concerns the
large shopping/office complex in the Kandy city centre that
is nearing completion.
I
wish to state that Mr. Thusitha Wijesena had originally submitted
plans for his building to the KMC in 1994. In 1998 approval
was granted. Read

Kandy
Fire Hazards
Sri
Lankans do not take fire hazards very seriously mainly because
we believe that our houses and buildings are built with
material that are generally fire resistant and are mostly
stand alone structures. The Kotuwe Kade fire fiasco that
we report in this edition of The Kandy News makes us question
some of those assumptions especially in relation to a city
such as Kandy.
First,
we are increasingly using substitutes for traditional building
materials, especially for interior finishes and these new
materials are more vulnerable to fire.
