Lion Chithra Weerarathna is First Lady President of Kandy Lions
Lion Chithra Weerarathna was installed as
the president of the Lions Club of Kandy at the Installation Meeting
of the club held recently. She is the first lady to lead the club
which is one of Sri Lanka's oldest Lions Clubs with a record of
service of over forty years. Past District Governor Lion Shirley
Tissera conducted the installation ceremony.
For many years Lion Chithra played a major leadership role in
the Lion Ladies activities of the club. Winning a top award for
service at the annual District Convention became a ritual for
the Kandy Lion Ladies and Lion Chithra was one of the live wires
behind that success. The election to the presidency of the club
where the majority are men is recognition of the service and leadership
capabilities that Lion Chithra has shown.
Lion Chithra is also a past president of the Sinhala Welenda Mandalaya
Vanitha Ekamuthuwa.
Lion Chithra will have the support of the veteran social worker
Lion Dudley Gunatilaka as her secretary and Lion Rukshan Gunatilaka
as treasurer. Her husband Lion Daya is also a very active leader
in Lionism and functions as one of the Program Coordinators for
the Governor of the District.
Lion Chithra told The Kandy News that she would be commencing
her work immediately. She and her team have already lined up many
service projects starting with 20 cataract operations and a donation
to “Safe Motherhood” next month. She has scheduled
a musical show with bridal fashions as a mega fundraiser for Saturday
27th of September.

Board of the Central Province Chamber of Commerce and Industries
together with the entire outgoing Board of Directors affirming
the confidence of the membership in the work that they had
done in the past year.
The Treasure in his report noted that Chamber was able to
return the one million rupees that it borrowed from the
Sinhala Welenda Mandalay to develop the Business School
of the Chamber. He also thanked Chamber Director Mohan Rasaiah
for the rent- free accommodation that he has provided for
the Chamber office and the Business School. This is a major
contribution that everybody in the Chamber appreciates.
The activities of the Chamber in the past year included
training programs in areas such as customer care, negotiation
and mediation skills, conflict resolution and proposal writing.
Seminars were conducted on the New Company Act, Banking
and Financial Assistance, Policy Constraints, Regulatory
Barriers and the Regional Economy, and the Government Budget.
Other major events were business office appliances exhibition,

for the first time in Sri Lanka under that concept “Business

One of the landmark achievements of the Chamber during the
