The Lions Clubs of the Kandy area recently began a new year of service to the community by installing key officials for the new Lionistic year. Lion Professor Luxshmen Wijeyeweera, a senior member of the Faculty of Dental Sciences at the University of Peradeniya and a charter member of the Lions Club of Katugastota ascended the Lions District leadership position when he was installed Governor of District 306C1 at the Lions International Convention recently held in Hong Kong. He is the first Lion from Kandy area to reach this major leadership position in Sri Lankan Lionism after Lion Engineer Lloyd Perera became governor of District 306C almost twenty years ago. DG Lion Luxshmen has chosen the theme “Health and Happiness for All Through Dedicated Service to the Community” underscoring his lifelong professional commitment to the promotion of good health.

Another senior faculty member from the University of Peradeniya Lion Professor C B Dissanayake who teaches Geology assumed the leadership of the Lions Club of Kandy. The Kandy Club which is of one of Sri Lanka's oldest Lions Clubs will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Lion CB at his installation announced a comprehensive program of community service that stressed health and education as key components.

The Lions Club of Senkadagala chartered in 1982 elected another top professional Lion Chinthaka Wijesooriya to lead the club this year. Lion Chinthaka is the General Manager of Sri Lanka Telecom, Kandy Lion Chinthaka's program of community service for the year includes a substantial program of assistance for tsunami victims and a “Landmark Project” in the health sector to benefit the Kandy community.
