Cultural Tapestry At Kalyana Ranga 2006
The President of the Hindu Cultural Association Mr. Duncan Nugewela and India's Kandy-based Assistant High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Mr. Rajan Pillai light the oil lamp to inaugurate the Kalyana Ranga 2006 performing arts festival held recently in Kandy.

Mr. Pillai was the chief guest at this annual event that was organised by Indo-Sri Lanka Cultural Association in collaboration with the Kandy Indian High Commission. As has become customary in this annual event, dancing, singing and musical performances from school children from the Central Province attired in colourful costume representing the rich tapestry of ethnic and cultural diversity of the region entertained the guests.


Dumbara Lions Help Children and Elders

The Lions Club of Dumbara recently supplied breakfast to 950 children to celebrate the International Elders and the Children's Day. Lion President Raja Pushpakumara, (from left) Zone Chairman Lion M L A Farouk and Regional Coordinator Lion Jayampathy de Silva distributed the meals to the children at the at Avanhala, Kandy.

The club also joined hands with the Saylan Bank to open 1000 Tikiri Deposits for one thousand children, each with a deposit of Rs 500. Seventeen Lions including Lions Shanka Thilekerathna, Aravinda Dissanayake, Chanaka Gunawardena, and Lakshmi Jayawardena as well as several officers from Seylan Bank were present at the function.


Rotarians Help Tsunami Fishermen

The Rotary Club of Kandy in association with the Rotary Club of Dickoya recently provided fiberglass fishing boats with engines and fishing nets to fourteen fishermen from the East Coast who lost their fishing equipment in the tsunami. The Rs 4.6m project was funded with a matching grant that the International Rotary Foundation awarded to the Dikoya Rotary. The Rotary Club of Kalmunai assisted in identifying the beneficiaries
