Letter of Appeal for Assistance to Sri Lanka Disaster Victims

Dear Friends:
By now you would be aware that the disaster in Sri Lanka has claimed over 31,000 lives – the figure keeps climbing - and devastated a large number of communities. The damage caused to the physical infrastructure is estimated to be around $1.5 billion. Even more importantly, tens of thousands of people have lost their loved ones, homes, and their livelihoods.

We in Kandy are organizing a small relief effort through this newspaper in collaboration with the International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES), the Lions Club of Senkadagala and the Lions Club of Trincomalee. The assistance will go mainly to the multi-ethnic community in Trincomalee in Eastern Sri Lanka that was one of the areas worst affected.
Using a part of the money raised thus far from our foreign friends and with additional contributions from the local Kandy community we took $11,600 worth of supplies including school supplies and toys for 1000 children, and underwear for females and rubber slippers that were give to over 1000 adults.
