DIG Nihal Samarakoon Calls for
Public Support to Provide a Community-friendly Police Service
 Police exist to
serve the community. I request the Kandy community and government and
non-government organizations in Kandy to cooperate with the Kandy
Police to maintain law and order in the city and enable us to provide a
good service said the newly appointed Kandy DIG Nihal Samarakoon in an
exclusive interview with The Kandy News. Mr. Samarakoon assumed duties
in his new post in Januarry 2011.He also overlooks the Nuwara Eliya
District. Mr. Samarakoon joined the police inspectorate as a
sub-inspector in1973. Since then over a period of almost four decades
he has served in almost every part of the island including the war
areas and in several different bureaus within the police.
He was OIC and later HQI in Maskeliya and Dambulla. His first promotion
as a gazetted officer in the rank of ASP took him to Colombo South. He
has had stints in the Bureau of Special Operations, CID and the Bribery
Commission. During the war he served in Batticaloa (SP Operations).
Then he served in several stations as SSP including Nuwara Eliya and
Trincomalee. His first appointment as DIG in 2009 took him to
Kilinochchi soon after it was liberated from the grip of the LTTE. Read More>>
